A Chrono Trigger-inspired JRPG and one of my most anticipated 2023 releases, Sea of Stars has added Xbox to its August release plans.

We’ve been covering Sea of Stars since its successful Kickstarter reveal in 2020, and we haven’t let it slip off our radar since. Last month, it set a release date of August 29 for Switch, PC, PS4, and PS5, and now developer Sabotage has announced that it will release on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S at the same time. The studio went further by revealing the news in a short animation that could pass for a scene straight out of the game:

“From the beginning, we secretly hoped to be able to cover all current and previous generation consoles,” reads a separate announcement on Kickstarter (opens in a new tab). “Production being a curveball world, we had to leave the message on ‘PC and consoles’ to avoid having to backtrack on some things. With the big unknowns now in the rearview mirror, we’re thrilled to finally confirm Xbox’s addition to the party!”

If this is your first time hearing of Sea of Stars, it’s a “retro-inspired” JRPG with a turn-based combat system that incorporates timed and strategic attacks. a “lock-on system” that prevents key enemies from charging powerful moves. The developers also say the game avoids common JRPG annoyances like mandatory leveling, random encounters, and jarring transitions to new areas and battlegrounds.

Sea of Stars is also gorgeous, its SNES-esque pixel art clearly inspired by its ancestors, but still distinct and fresh. The dynamic lighting effects are amazing throughout the game’s day-night cycle, and I love that it includes activities like fishing, cooking, tavern hangouts, and even an RPG of in-game table to make the world feel alive If it lives up to Sabotage’s reputation, it could be one of the best JRPGs we’ve had in a long time.

This is how we classify the best snes games ever done, and don’t worry, Chrono Trigger is on the list.
