You want to know how to get a minecraft cape and how to equip them on your avatar. You’ve heard rumors, whispers about a mythical piece of cloth adorning the shoulders of the most elite players in Minecraft. Legends tell of countless Minecraft capes given to a lucky few over the years. It says in the block (sigh) that capes also change the look of Minecraft Elytra, the magical wings found on final ships, as they take up the same amount of space on a player’s back. Needless to say, Minecraft capes are highly coveted, but they haven’t been easy to come by.
An almost endless amount of customizable options make Minecraft one of the best PC games: from the world itself, to the gameplay, to the graphics, to your skin. Whispers and rumors aside, what is a Minecraft sandbox cape? A cape is an equipable avatar item that sits separately from your avatar skin, so you can cut and change it at will, even easier than you can change your Minecraft skin. The hard part about Minecraft capes, however, is getting your hands on them – there are elusive and exclusive capes, capes to buy from the Minecraft Marketplace, and even some to suggest ideas to Mojang Studios, so here’s how to get yours. own Minecraft cape and how to equip them when you have a closet full.
How to get a minecraft cape
As a Minecraft cape is usually a commemorative item, it can be earned at events, Minecraft Live conventions, or as a reward for a specific task, such as migrating your Mojang account. We have a more specific breakdown of how to get Minecraft capes below, regardless of which version of the game you’re playing.
The different ways to get a cape in Minecraft are:
- Migrate your Mojang account
- Get the game!
- Play the Bedrock Edition
- exclusive diapers
- minecraft mods
Migrate your Mojang account
In 2020, Mojang announced that it would migrate all Minecraft Java Edition accounts from Mojang to Microsoft. This is a required change, and you should have already been prompted to do so if you have an old Mojang account.
If you’ve done it before, or once you’ve done it, you’ll unlock a new shiny layer. New Minecraft accounts are automatically set up with Microsoft instead of Mojang and unfortunately will have no way to get the Migrator Layer.
own the game
In 2022, Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock (aka Windows) Edition were merged into the same launcher, along with Minecraft Dungeons and all future games like Minecraft Legends. To celebrate the merger, players who had both the Java and Bedrock editions of the PC game on the same account received the Vanilla skin on both versions beforehand. Again, unfortunately, if you don’t already have it, you won’t be able to get it anymore, but if you find it in your collection, now you know why!
Play Bedrock Edition
The Pan Cloak, as seen above, is issued to all Bedrock Edition players and can be equipped from the “Capes” tab in the Bedrock Locker Room. When fitted with an elytron, the “bread layer” looks like a pancake with butter and maple syrup, doesn’t it?
Other capes can be given to Bedrock players, as the Founder’s cape is another exclusive cape given to existing players of the game in 2019.
exclusive diapers
Those who ventured to any Minecon event prior to Minecon Earth 2017 received Minecraft capes; each year a different color and design. Even rarer are the personal capes given to the lucky ones in recognition of their accomplishments, like Reddit user u/billyk_ who received a personal turtle cape for suggesting that Mojang should add turtles to Minecraft.
Unless you come up with a suggestion as good as the turtles (unlikely) or can time travel to Minecons past, it looks like you’re out of luck getting one of these capes Minecraft in the Java version.
Get a cape in Minecraft with mods
So capes are still pretty rare in Java Minecraft, and we don’t know when the next fan-exclusive cape will be released, so what if you desperately want your avatar to have a cape? even now, and the free migration layer doesn’t interest you? Luckily, with the power of mods, you can create your own cape behind you as you walk! You can get any of the coveted capes in the game, or better yet, any cape you can think of, using mods like the Advanced Capes Mod.
There is one caveat: other players you meet on Minecraft multiplayer servers will not be able to see your cape unless they also have the same mods installed. So the only way to get capes that everyone can see is to wait for Mojang to give you official capes while you migrate your account.
How to Equip Minecraft Cloaks
It should be noted that if you play both the Java and Bedrock editions of the game, your capes are version-exclusive, so your Java capes will not appear in your Bedrock dressing room and vice versa.
java edition
If you have an official Minecraft skin in Java Edition, you can find it in the Skins section of the Minecraft launcher. Head over to the Masks tab, select the mask you want to add your layer to, then click “Duplicate” or “Edit.” From there choose the layer you want to add and save it as a new skin selection.
It’s best to keep your cape equipped, as you can disable it in-game. To unequip your cape, go to game options, select “Skin Customization” and set the cape to “Disabled”.
bedrock editing
For the Bedrock version, launch the game. Then click on the tab on the left of the screen with a red cape with the Mojang logo. This will show all of your available capes, so choose one and click equip.
Equip your cape to your elytra
You don’t have to do anything to equip your cape with your elytra. Conversely, if you wear a cape when you equip an eltyra, your wings will automatically take on the appearance of your cape! Cool!
