If you loved the audio work on action-adventure games like Control, Evil West, and the upcoming multiplayer extraction shooter Hyenas, then you’ll be a fan of audio director Justin Andree’s work. – Game News caught up with Andree at WASD 2023 in London, and we asked them how Control’s biggest musical moment came about and what to expect from Hyenas’ music later this year.
Andree was part of the reason Control pulled off one of his best sequences, when the song Take Control plays at the Ashtray Maze level. Take Control was written specifically for the game by the fictional band The Old Gods of Asgard, an alias of the real-world band Poets of the Fall, a Finnish rock band that has provided music for Remedy games since Max Payne 2. .
“I think we’re starting to see more ideas like that in games,” Andree told – Game News at WASD 2023. Are we going for that particular track?’ Trying to piece together the pieces of the musical puzzle.”

Andree goes on to explain how games like Control and Guardians of the Galaxy use in-universe bands and music to iterate on how music interacts with gameplay, and how that can influence how developers think about games. copyright issues that may arise later. online in your games.
“The concept of having Star-Lord as a gang in Guardians of the Galaxy was awesome,” says Andree. “Very often when you think about allowing music for games, the first thing that comes to mind is ‘we’re going to be hit with withdrawals, what if we go to another platform that doesn’t prevail’ , while Guardians fully covered.
“The ancient gods of Asgard do it the same way and provide a remedy in their universe. They can move around freely and connect to everything, but they never run into any of those obstacles that you might encounter in terms of copyright restrictions.
We also had the opportunity to ask Andree about Hyenas, and while they didn’t talk much about the next extraction shooter from Creative Assembly, developer of Total War and Alien Isolation, we did learn something. on the air.
“Music plays a terribly huge role in it,” Andree tells us. “Among the various things you’ve probably seen briefly in the trailers so far, there are some really cool things.”
