There are many creatures players can use in Ark: Survival Evolved, but none are as valuable and used as the Stegosaurus. Although it offers very little brute force and is primarily a docile herbivore, the Stegosaurus, or Stego, is an unassuming creature. However, for the PvP and even PvE communities in Ark: Survival Evolved, the Stego is one of the most important tames. In this guide, we are going to tell you how to tame the Stego in Ark: Survival Evolved.

What Stegosaurus does in Ark: Survival Evolved

The Stego is a docile herbivore that remains passive until attacked, choosing to move in pairs or trios. The Stego serves as a sturdy carrier that protects the rider and is a great way to transport large and heavy items due to its load bearing weight. Since his TLC update, Stego has made variations to his armor. The fact that Stego can do this allows him to change the way he can collect resources, as well as contributing to the PvP side of the game.

The Stego has a very high health pool, especially if raised correctly. That high health pool, coupled with a decent armor mount and a Yutyrannus buff, can mean your Stego will be able to absorb turret fire if you try to attack a base. The protection it offers the rider is also a big draw for keen PvP players.

The Stego is also capable of impaling enemy players and even the Forest Titan if you aim your attack correctly. Players who impale themselves can pierce their armor, leaving them wide open. The impale attack is weight limited, but it’s worth noting that the Forest Titan only has a drag weight of 35, so it can be affected.

How to tame Stegosaurus and what you’ll need in Ark: Survival Evolved

The Stegosaurus is a slow creature, but the problem comes when its herd is also moving to attack you. To counter this, make sure you have the following ready:

  • Regular x32 Kibble for 150 Stego on a server with 1x taming speed, 32 Sarco Kibble if played on mobile or Crops.
  • Long neck rifle, crossbow or Tek bow.
  • Impact from tranquilizer darts, tranquilizer arrows, or elemental shards.
  • Narcotics or Narcoberries.
  • Harpoon launcher and net projectile.

You can choose to immobilize the Stego and his friends first if you are concerned that the Stego is too fast; however, it is quite simple to tame these guys. You just have to use the shooting and running attack. If the Stego gets too close to you, remember that it stops before it attacks, which means you have a second to run. Keep shooting until he passes out and use your chosen taming food. You can also use blood elixir for a unique boost.
