The goal of Dark and Darker is to collect the best loot possible while going through a dangerous dungeon with your friends. One of the best places to get the best loot is the treasure chambers behind the golden doors, but you need the Golden Key item to unlock these doors. There are several ways to get a golden key in Dark and Darker, and some are easier than others. Depending on your skill level and that of your friends, getting a golden key can take a little or a long time.

The best and easiest way to get a golden key is to buy it from another player in the store. It will cost players 1,000 gold to buy a gold key, which can be expensive for some newbie players. However, if you have extra gold and can afford it, it’s worth investing in the key, because behind every golden door is a chamber filled with valuable treasure.

Golden Keys are also a rare occurrence of Skeleton Champions, powerful skeletal monsters that you will encounter during your dungeon exploration. If you don’t have the gold to buy the Golden Key from the store, you can outrun some Skeleton Champions until one of them finally drops a Golden Key. This method of obtaining a Golden Key takes the longest because the chances of a Skeleton Champion dropping a Key are low. Still, if you want to save your gold and are willing to put in the hours, killing Skeleton Champions might be your go-to method.

Another possible way to get a golden key is to take one from a downed player. Dark and Darker requires online functionality to play with your friends, and you’ll meet other players as you go through the different floors of the dungeon. When a player dies, they drop their loot. If another player had a golden key and perishes, you can potentially recover that key without too much trouble.
