A poisonous and enriched seafood delight, the puffer fish is one of the many fish you can catch in Valheim. Unlike other fish, the puffer fish releases toxins from its body if you come into contact with it or get too close to it. However, this poison effect does not apply when the fish is in your inventory. Whether you’re looking to prank your friends with this mechanic or want to complete your Valheim shell trophy wall, you need to understand what biome and type of fishing bat is needed to catch this fish.

Fish for puffer fish in Valheim

Before you set off on your fishing trip to catch a puffer fish in Valheim, be aware that it only bites on a specific lure. Like Anglerfish, Pufferfish prefer the Misty Fishing Lure, a lure crafted in the Cauldron using Fishing Lure ×20 and Lox Trophy ×1. The Fishing Lure can be purchased from Haldor the Merchant dwarf in piles for 20-10 pieces per pile. As for the Lox trophy, you must explore the plains in search of Lox, the reptilian ox-like creatures that normally breed in herds. There’s a 10% chance that a slain Lox will drop their trophy, so you might need to do a few hunting trips before you can craft the misty pufferfish fishing bait in Valheim.
Once you have the right bait to catch the pufferfish, the next step is to enter the Mists of Valheim, the misty lands where the giants once resided. While not necessary for fishing, we highly recommend building a flower bed to create a wishing fountain for Wisps. Having a Wisplight allows you to see through foggy areas of the Mistlands, lessening the threat of the unknown. After finding a good spot to fish off the Mists, cast your fishing line with the misty fishing lure to catch pufferfish in Valheim.
