The Dredging Explosives needed to clear the rocks are unlocked in Gale Cliffs, given to you by the Retired Whaler after you bring his brother the Family Crest, and are now available for purchase in select stores. It’s a bit of a long quest that will take you through most of the Gale Cliffs area, but it’s worth it, especially since the explosives will allow you to access some of the special relics that make up the main objectives of the game. Below we will show you how to get explosives in the drag, as well as how to find the family crest and how to get past the giant one-eyed fish that will try to bite your helmet as you go.

How to Get Explosives in Dredge and Family Crest Location

Dredge Explosives are obtained from Retired Whaler Ingfell in Gale Cliffs, southeast of the starting area. You don’t want to go there right away, as you’ll need a faster engine to cross the ocean safely, but after doing an upgrade or two, you should be able to make the trip.

Once you reach Gale Cliffs, you need to complete a quest called Hermitage, which will end with selling explosives all over the map. Here is a basic procedure to guide you.

  1. Head to Ingfell and talk to the retired whaler, then into the ruins to talk to the hermit.. In between, you’ll learn that they’re brothers, and although the hermit wants to see his brother, he can’t without the Family Crest.
  2. Go to the open bay in the center of Gale Cliffs. The obvious route is actually cut by a chain of rocks, shown in red on the map above. You’ll deal with that later, but for now go around the island to the unnamed pier to the south, then back up to the green marker we left behind.
  3. Avoid the giant one-eyed fish on your travels. Exploration isn’t as easy as it should be: beyond falling rocks and sudden geysers, it’s also the hunting ground of a giant one-eyed fish, visible underwater by the red glow his eye emits. More details below if you want help.
  4. Dredge at Family Crest. Obviously, you’ll need to know how to dredge in Dredge to do this, but at this point it should be something you’ve already mastered. The spot with the crest is marked with a golden glow in the center of this open area. Get it fast and get out of there!
  5. Bring it to the whaler in Ingfell. Show him the Crest and he’ll ask you to blow up the target wall that was obstructing you earlier. He won’t give you explosives for this, they are already set up and just need lighting.
  6. Blow up the target wall. This time you can approach from the north to do it, but don’t forget to watch out for that pesky fish! Climb up and interact with the wall to get the demolition option.
  7. Go back to the whaler, then look for the hermit. The last step in the process; at this point you can confirm everything is done with the Whaler, before he asks you to go get your brother, which will take a few minutes at most.

Once done, the retired whaler will give you a free set of explosives, but keep in mind that they are single-use and also take up cargo space. That said, he and some vendors will now sell explosives for $40 apiece, so you can keep them in your cellar for certain occasions or go buy one if you find a clog you want to clear. While in the area, you should also check out the merchant at Rusty Pontoon, as you can purchase the rare Dredge Refined Metal while you’re there.

How to beat the giant one-eyed fish in Gale Cliffs

The giant cyclops fish in Gale Cliffs is a nightmare because there’s no way to damage or scare it (at least that I know of). He The best approach I can suggest is stealth and speed. – use your boosted engines to escape if you have them, and try to complete your business in Gale Cliffs as quickly as possible, to minimize your time in the danger zone.

It is to highlight that if the fish bites you, it deals 2 hull damage per bite – so at full health you shouldn’t be instantly destroyed, plus it usually goes away for a while after an attack, giving you a chance to escape. Yet even if you do, you’re wasting money on repairs, and you risk damaging your equipment or losing your charge in the process.
