Your horse is your only companion in The Witcher 3 as you explore the harsh medieval lands. They are your only means of transport and allow you to carry all the items you have accumulated during your journey, including game trophies and contracts. As such, they are an important part of the entire gameplay experience. While the brown mare you ride will be present throughout your journey, there are several ways to get a new one. So here’s how to get a new horse in The Witcher 3.

How to find and get a new horse in The Witcher 3

There is no stable in The Witcher 3 to buy or sell horses, so the brown mare you initially had will be the one you ride all the time. But there is a way to get a new horse in the game permanently and it will be towards the end of the main story. During the “Blood on the Battlefield” quest, you can choose to take Ciri to Emperor Emhyr. For bringing Ciri, Emhyr will give you coins. If you refuse the coins, he will offer you a new black Nilfgaardian stallion. From then on, each time you call your horse, the black stallion appears instead of the brown mare. Geralt will also call him Roach, which is a name he gives to all of his horses.

Another way to get a new horse is to tame horses through Axii Signs. You can do this by finding wild horses in the different regions of the game.

If you find a running horse in the wild, use the Axii sign and you can mount and ride it. It will also respond to your commands. It is also possible to tame an entire herd of wild horses using the Axii sign.

Unfortunately, as soon as you disassemble it and leave it for a while, the power of the Axii sign will fade and it will return to normal. So you cannot permanently tame wild horses.
