The new Harry Potter Hogwarts Legacy game is certainly proving popular, currently occupying the top four spots on Steam’s sales chart, just above Valve’s own Steam Deck. Hogwarts Legacy has also broken several Twitch records as aspiring Gryffindors, Slytherins, Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws arrive at the School of Witchcraft and begin to explore the Avalanche role-playing game.

It’s a somewhat unusual Steam top five this week – you might be wondering how Hogwarts Legacy can take up four slots when it’s, well, just one game. Hogwarts Legacy Deluxe sits firmly at number one, with the standard version at numbers two and three, and the Deluxe Edition again at number four. Just below, down from number two last week, is Valve’s Steam Deck. I guess a lot of people are busy looking for the Hogwarts Legacy Demiguise statue and moon locations.

It all comes down to Stock Keeping Units, or SKUs. When games are listed and sold on Steam, they are assigned unique part numbers, almost like barcodes, to differentiate them from other products. The Early Access versions of Hogwarts Deluxe Edition and Standard Editions have two separate SKUs, as do the full Global Release Day Editions.

So because you have four different editions of Hogwarts Legacy: Deluxe Early Access, Standard Early Access; Deluxe Release Day, Standard Release Day: You get four different entries on Steam, which are ultimately reflected in the sales data on the Steam database. With so many people logging on and spending hours, you might want to have Hogwarts Legacy’s level cap explained to you, so you know exactly where all that playtime is taking you.

It comes as Hogwarts Legacy sets a streaming record, overtaking Cyberpunk 2077 as the single-player game with the most concurrent viewers on Twitch. If you’re tuned, see how to find Hogwarts Legacy Twitch drops.

Harry Potter series creator JK Rowling has made a number of transphobic comments on social media in recent years. Warner Bros. has the license to create games based on Harry Potter. Although the details of this agreement are not known to the public and WB Games claims that “JK Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game”, it is likely that as creator and owner of the intellectual property of Harry Potter, she receives royalties on your sales.
