In a Twitter post, Square Enix responded to the ask why Cloud couldn’t see the Whispers in FFVII Remake until Aerith caught him. Whispers are specter-like enemies in the game that appear in both cutscenes and enemies that Cloud can fight.

The reason Cloud was able to see the Whispers was because he hit those trying to attack Aerith in FFVII remake. It’s not because of his contact with Aerith herself. Touching a Whisper that Aerith is touching will not allow you to see it. Cloud was able to see them because the Whispers saw him as someone who could manipulate the fate of the planet.

These are the same reasons Barret might see them. He’s also someone who can influence the fate of the planet, and he hit a Whisper who was watching Cloud. Rufus also came into contact with a Whisper while fighting Cloud.

Whispers are an exclusive enemy in the remake of FFVII. They seem to appear whenever events begin to deviate from the course of fate. Aerith seems to have a deep connection to the Whispers, although nothing has been confirmed by Square Enix yet.

Since the game’s release, Square Enix often posts tweets like this that explain the big lore or little trivia about the game. It has also shared concept art for the characters, people, and things that make up the world of Midgar. For example, he previously discussed some behind-the-scenes details about Barret’s development from the original Final Fantasy VII.

FFVII Remake is available for PS4, PS5 and Windows PC.
