final fantasy 16 Producer Naoki Yoshida and directors Hiroshi Takai and Kazutoyo Maehiro spoke with Japanese outlet Dengeki Online, and during the interview, the developers revealed more information about its gameplay. More specifically, how the combat systems and skills of the FFXVI inspired, in part, by the working system of final fantasy v. They also talked about the influence of live streaming on the creation of these systems. (Thanks Dengeki!)

The developers said they didn’t want to make a simple action RPG, but a game that was fun to play. Director Maehiro said that the skill progression system of final fantasy v inspired part of the development of FFXVIwith Takai comparing the Eikons of FFXVI to the working system FFV. When people think of FFV, they can of working system and “Spellblade-Dualwield-Rapidfire” combination of powerful final abilities. The team wanted to create a combat system that would allow players to create similar unique combinations.

In a direct quote from director Maehiro, he said:

“It would be easier to understand if I said that (the fight) will feel like it’s controlling Bartz, the main character of FFVin action in real time.

Takai pointed out that live streaming is popular today as another reason for creating such a system. Seeing other players approach combat in different ways, viewers may want to try new skill combinations. Yoshida commented that this system would really shine in a second run while playing on a higher difficulty, and teased the inclusion of a final boss fight as secondary content.

Additionally, Takai said that the development team doesn’t want FFXVI being an open-world game, with the main story being responsible for guiding the pacing of the game.

final fantasy 16 is currently in development and will be released for the first time on PlayStation 5 on June 22, 2023. After an exclusivity period expires, people may be able to watch it on other platforms.
