Picture: DOOM 2016 identification software

“DOOM 4” eventually became DOOM at some point in its development, as the legendary software developer rebooted the series in 2016, removing all subtitles of any kind. The game essentially reinvented the franchise after DOOM 3, but at one point the title was a lot, a lot closer to the “survival horror” style of the previous series entry.

As seen in a new leaked concept trailer, DOOM 2016 was once planned as a more direct sequel to DOOM 3, even baring number four in its title. It was also much darker than what we ended up getting. Here, take a look (watch out for headset users, it’s quite noisy):

This clip was first seen on an ID software developer’s Artstation page, although the original has since been removed. Of course, the internet sees what the internet sees, and now this relic of DOOM development is archived for everyone to see!

This is a very interesting throwback to what has become a pivotal development period for id Software. In the end, we loved how ‘DOOM 4’ turned out, and it’s the sequel to DOOM Eternal for that matter, but still, it feels like things could have been very different. .

Id Software is now owned by Xbox through Bethesda, which makes us even more intrigued about what’s next for the longtime DOOM developer. Hopefully we’ll see some of them soon enough!

How would you like this version of ‘DOOM 4’ to come out? Let us know your thoughts.
