It’s already in theaters and this morning we woke up to the Super Mario Bros: The Movie review on Gamereactor. One of the most obvious aspects we highlight is the parade of references to the Marian universe and even other 80s 8-bit games for the NES and arcade, and the truth is there are small sequences dedicated to the great secondary characters, as well as important absences of the others always expected.
Obviously, we recommend that you continue reading if you have already seen the film because we are entering the territory of spoilersbut here are our favorite major cameos and elements we missed, many of which are surely reserved for later installments.
The Best Super Mario Bros: The Movie Cameos
- Babies Mario and Luigi. If toads “are adorable” by their own admission, this childhood memory of babies made us skip a beat. The design of Baby Mario and Baby Luigi is the same as Yoshi’s Island or Mario Kart, and it was inevitable to hear the “oooh” in the room. One of the best references to games, nostalgic and well executed.
- Mayor Paulina. Originally known as the “Lady” to whom
marioJumpman had to save from the clutches of the dumbest monkey, Pauline rose to prominence with Super Mario Odyssey as the singer-songwriter mayor of the urban kingdom, specifically the city of Nueva Donk. How not to have a few seconds of glory with this film shot in New York… - Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong. The jungle kingdom and Kong’s army have changed a lot since then, especially the designs that Rare introduced in the 90s, but Donkey Kong’s companions in lands 1 and 2 appear as another nod to the stalls. Never better said, because it’s during the fight between Mario and DK, with Diddy a complete fan of the latter and Dixie with his recognizable blond hair, both in the audience.
- Rey Boo and Rey Bob-Omb. Bowser is the king of evil and rules over all lesser enemies, but he also respects the other evil realms and doesn’t hesitate to invite them to his obligatory wedding. Above all, King Bob-Omb is a completely nostalgic appearance for lovers of the historic Super Mario 64, while Boo’s representative served to do all the dark part that Luigi has to endure put, for now, by the Littles. Bones, Shy-Guys and so on.
- The giant moray eel. Speaking of Super Mario 64, Miyamoto and company didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to include a fearsome sea monster. Here we call it a giant eel, and it ends up swallowing up the gorilla and the plumber. Undoubtedly, another reference to a mythical enemy that he later repeated in different variants in other games.

The main absences in the Super Mario Bros.
- Wario, Waluigi and Daisy. Honestly, we weren’t expecting them. They had enough work to introduce both the main character and the secondary character to stop with these “shadow” variants. However, after seeing the movie, it’s true that the flip-letter pranksters could have been seen by Brooklyn, while the second-rate princess might just solve some of the mystery of Peach in a future installment.
- yoshi. Ok the trailer has already emptied like so many other things that yoshis were coming out but it was more of a background hustle and nod to its fruit… and there it is let it end until the post-credits scene and its egg. It is clear that a special green yoshi, as in Super Mario World or Super Mario Galaxy 2, will have an important role in the inevitable second installment, but more than one will want to see Yoshi up close. It just wouldn’t have been given the prominence it deserves.
- Costumes and power-ups: Frog, boot, penguin, bee, squirrel, helicopter, statue, giant mushroom… although the main power-ups of the franchise have been released, Nintendo still has its work cut out to deal with enemies in the next episodes . The penguin one was expected because of the beleaguered penguins, but the chosen ones make the most sense.
- Bowsy or Bowser Jr.. Another that seems clearly reserved for the second part. Seeing the plot here, it would have been difficult to fit it into the “home” environment, like the Koopalings, but something tells us it has enough appeal to play a part in a sequel.
- Chomp Padlock. Is this enemy really not in the film? Maybe we’re blind, but right now we don’t remember seeing it, and look at the enemies coming out! We’ve included it in this list for two reasons: because it’s our favorite and because we’re just replaying The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. If you see it, please let us know.
