Brendan Greene, better known as PlayerUnknown, has shared details about his latest adventure, Project Artemis, an open-world game that spans an entire planet.
Brendan Greene, better known by his username PlayerUnknown, is an Ireland-based game developer who made a name for himself as the leader of the team behind the popular shooter PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. After leaving work on the hit Battle Royale game, Greene turned to other projects. One of them was the mysterious Prologue, which we told you about a few years ago.
Now on the PC Gamer pages, Greene has shared more information about working on this ambitious project.
An open world full of possibilities
PC Gamer’s Christopher Livingston was lucky enough to check out an early version of Project Artemis – a procedurally generated space the size of an entire planet. In the future, the open world will support vegetation, wildlife, or fully functioning weather systems. Players will interact with it and use available resources. However, as Greene points out:
I don’t want to categorize it as a game. I’m sure there will be gameplay elements. And we have plans for a light survival exploration type, life civilization game mode. What else would you do with a huge world?” Greene said.
Some of the survival and exploration mechanics will be available in Foreword. As the author explains, the project, announced several years ago, will be a kind of tech demo, announcing the release of the studio’s flagship project, Artemis.
Continuing on the theme of the vast possibilities PlayerUnknown Productions’ ambitious project will bring, Brendan Greene mentions:
“If you just want to travel the world, you can. If you want to go sit by a lake and read a book, you can do that too. geared towards a genre or a thing that you do, there will be many ways to appreciate the world or have an experience in the world. For me, it is more important to create the space than to aim for one thing. “
Looking for comparisons, PlayerUnknown cites games like Second Life or Rust, in which players decide for themselves what activities they will perform, and the ways to spend time with the title can vary widely from recipient to recipient. the other.

layer of history
Surprisingly, the open experience of mugwort does not pretend to be completely devoid of narration. The author briefly presents the suggested outline of the story:
“The story of Artemis is that it’s a digital place where humanity must go to learn how to reclaim the earth.”
The plot will take the player 500 years into the future, three centuries after mankind left their home planet under mysterious circumstances. Greene plans to bring the story closer together in a planned comic book series. However, its release date remains unknown.
Blockchain system integration
Asked about the similarities to “metaverse” type projects, associated with companies like Meta and Epic, PlayerUnknown makes it clear that he has no intention of personally selling virtual space.:
I will not sell land like most digital spaces. If we allow people to claim land, they will have to go. You will need to claim your claim, and maybe do some work and gather resources to claim that coin for yourself,” says Greene.
However, the developer does not exclude the possibility of reselling the conquered lands to other players.. For this reason, Greene plans to implement blockchain-based systems in the game. According to the developer, such mechanics could provide a “financial layer”, regulating the decentralized world to some extent.

Aware of the negative attitude of the gaming community towards blockchain-based game mechanics, Greene explains:
“There are a lot of scams (in the sector – editor’s note). Don’t get me wrong, I also see the horror of it all. But I think for some purposes it can work really well.”
many unknowns
Although the Artemis project promises to be truly impressive, one cannot help but feel that it is still in the early stages of development, with many of its features undergoing dynamic changes. The author himself does not hide that many aspects of Artemis, such as the question of network infrastructure and moderation, remain a mystery to him:
“If we build something like this, do I moderate it? Can I moderate it? I don’t know yet. I think I have to. I think it’s a moral obligation to make sure that we can eradicate the Nazis. But I’m still not sure. I think I need to hire people smarter than me to think about that.”

Despite the many unknowns and the initial stage of development, the Artemis project is still a very interesting and ambitious undertaking by a man who has already managed to build a reputation in the gaming industry. As soon as new information related to the Artemis project will be available, we will certainly inform you.
