PayPal had announced that it would impose a $2,500 fine on those who submit wrong information, but later backtracked.

PayPal is being targeted for upsetting some of its customers in the United States with an announcement it made: It said that starting November 3, it would charge users for misinformation a $2,500 fine.

This situation caused a bad reaction from users, before which the company ended up retracting and notifying that this policy had been sent by mistake. And it is that according to various press reports, PayPal’s Acceptable Use Policy was updated to include the penalty of “the sending and publication of any message, content or material” that “promotes erroneous information” or “presents a risk for the safety or welfare of the user.

According to a report by Mediaite, those who violated these terms would receive a fine of $2,500 dollars, directly from their PayPal accounts. “PayPal is not fining people for misinformation and this language was never intended to be inserted into our policy. We are sorry for the confusion this has caused,” a company spokesperson told Metro.

According to MarketWatch, after the notice, which was withdrawn, Google searches for users interested in how to cancel their PayPal accounts increased. These searches would have increased by 1,392%, after the announcement of the new policy and the apology issued by the company.

“An AUP notice was recently issued in error that included incorrect information. PayPal is not fining people for misinformation and this language was never intended to be in our policy. Our teams are working to correct our policy pages,” read a statement published by the Daily Wire.

The pressure was also exerted by important personalities such as Elon Musk and David Marcus, former president of PayPal, who showed their reactions on social networks.

It’s hard for me to openly criticize the company I loved and gave so much to, but @PayPal’s new AUP goes against everything I believe in. A private company can now decide to take your money if you say something you don’t agree with. It’s crazy,” Marcus said. Musk responded with “Okay.”
