This Thursday Discovery of Warner Bros. made a financial report where its CEO, David Zaslav confirmed that NetherRealm Studios is working on Mortal Kombat 12 and they plan to release it in 2023. Although NetherRealm Studios has been rumored to be working on Mortal Kombat 12 for some time, this is the first official confirmation that the game will arrive this year.
It’s well known that game developers and publishers plan announcements for their titles very carefully, sometimes reserving announcements for big events, or waiting very late in development, among other things. For this reason, it’s a shame that projects are leaked, although in the case of Mortal Kombat 12 the person who “leaked” the information was the same CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery.
In January of last year, a producer from NetherRealm Studios allegedly leaked the development of Mortal Kombat 12 with a photograph with Mortal Kombat art, as it showed a monitor with a file called “MK12_Mast…”. This photo was deleted within minutes, but since then we have been waiting for an official confirmation from NetherRealm Studios regarding the development of Mortal Kombat. This week, that confirmation came from David Zaslav.
In November 2022 Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat and Injustice, let his fans ask him questions on social networks and we took the opportunity to ask what was the next NetherRealm Studios game. Boon didn’t respond directly, but said it was either Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12, narrowing the options down to two. We don’t know if NetherRealm Studios is also working on Injustice 3, but it’s already been confirmed that Mortal Kombat 12 will arrive this year.
Ed Boon had no choice but to take the situation with humor, because after the announcement of Mortal Kombat 12 by Warner Bros. Discovery, the CCO of NetherRealm Studios posted the following message on his social media: “So who has heard of INJUSTICE 3?”.
At the moment there is no more information about Mortal Kombat 12 except for the fact that it has a release scheduled for 2023, so we just have to wait for the real announcement from NetherRealm Studios . We’ll most likely see Mortal Kombat 12 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, but it’s still possible that Xbox One, PS4, or Nintendo Switch versions will be announced.
