The campaign of donations in Bitcoin will be via Lightning Network in order to help victims of the forest fire that occurred in Chiloé

The non-profit association, NGO Bitcoin Chile, launched a campaign called “Levantemos Castro”, which seeks to raise 50 million dollars to be able to assist the 140 families affected by the forest fire in the municipality of Castro Chiloé.

For this, the NGO Bitcoin Chile is collecting donations in cryptocurrencies to be able to make deliveries of essential kits.

The funds are expected to be raised in BTC via the Lightning Network to lower transaction costs, which will be delivered in full in Chilean pesos to a bank account set up by the municipality of Castro to help those affected by the incident.

The forest fire that began last Thursday in the commune of Castro Chiloé, forced the competent entities to carry out their prompt evacuation due to the proximity of the incident with populated sectors.

As a result of this fire, the municipality of Castro indicates that to date 139 Basic Emergency Cards (FIBE) have been made, keeping 391 victims, 1 sheltered in the Municipal Sports Center and 200 pets gathered in the municipal center.

The campaign was also announced by the NGO’s social networks.

It is not the first time that Chile receives cryptocurrencies as donations, in 2015 the Chilean exchange house SurBTC announced the creation of a campaign of donations in bitcoin to help people affected by the earthquake that occurred in the north-central area of Chile.

In January 2017, SurBTC also launched another campaign of donations in bitcoin to help the victims of the largest forest fire in Chile, when the government declared the area in a state of emergency due to the burning of more than 250,000 hectares in the region, according to CONAF figures. .

Chile and Cryptocurrencies

Chile has increased interest in cryptocurrencies in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, ranking second with a score of 5.26, slightly behind Indonesia (5.76), according to the “Crypto Interest Index” of the analytics firm Coinformant. .

According to the report, there is a greater interest in cryptocurrencies, since more than 35% of the population in Chile are carrying out digital transactions in cryptocurrencies and it is expected to increase in the coming years.

Blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies have seen impressive new growth in the country, as more and more users have decided to invest in  Bitcoin, the study reveals.

Another Report on Blockchain in Latin America 2021, released by  Sherlock Communications,  revealed that 37% of Chilean respondents stated that they were “a little more interested” and that the other half would be “much more interested” due to the financial crisis they suffer. locals, regarding the adoption of cryptocurrencies.

It should be noted that last November, the Chilean deputy Karim Bianchi,  presented  a new Bill, which seeks to implement that bitcoin be accepted as a form of payment.

The project does not talk about converting BTC into legal tender, as  happened  in El Salvador, but establishes that Bitcoin would be valid for any type of transaction and that its value in pesos will be established by the market and will not be set by an authority, in parallel to the Chilean peso that would continue to be the sovereign currency of the nation.

The deputy highlighted that the project is the beginning of the new digital financial era and responds to the need to create a safe environment and provide protection to owners, financial intermediaries and people who interact in the digital market for transactions of value instruments.

If the project is approved by a majority in congress, cryptocurrencies in Chile would become accepted digital assets along with the Chilean peso.
