Shakira’s lawyer says that her love story with ex-footballer Gerard Piqué “has cost her” a millionaire sum. Check out his statements!
According to Shakira’s lawyer, her love story with Gerard Piqué has cost the singer dearly. Lawyer Pau Molins said that Shakira had prioritized the welfare of Sasha and Milan by reaching her agreement with the Spanish prosecutor’s office and paying a million-dollar fine. The artist did not want to go through a long trial, so as not to suffer that stress neither she nor her children.
“She didn’t want to look back, she just wants to be happy with her children and think about her career,” Molins told RAC1’s El món program with Jordi Basté. “Falling in love has cost her 120 million,” added the Barranquillera’s lawyer about her relationship with the Catalan ex-footballer and father of her children. “Falling in love with Sergio Ramos would have cost her less money,” he joked about another Spanish footballer, a friend of Piqué.
According to Molins, the Colombian singer in her time as a Spanish resident allegedly paid this juicy amount, between fines and taxes. “If you are a resident in Catalonia, you can go to prison for a crime that is impossible to happen to you in Madrid, with the same conduct, because there is no wealth tax,” said the lawyer. According to Molins, if Shakira had lived outside Catalonia, she could have avoided three of the six crimes of which she was accused.
If found guilty of alleged tax fraud, Shakira faced up to eight years in prison and a fine of up to $26 million. As part of the plea deal, she agreed to pay a $7.5 million fine, report The New York Times and Associated Press.
Gerard Piqué’s ex-partner lived in Spain for more than a decade before moving to Miami in April 2023 with their children. Shakira was accused of failing to pay 14.5 million euros (or $15.8 million) in taxes to the Spanish Treasury from 2012 to 2014.
Molins emphasized that Shakira never wanted to cheat the tax authorities. “She wasn’t looking to deceive anyone, she wasn’t doing it to hide,” he said.
