760 million people around the world already know #frozenhoney: it can destroy your teeth

760 million people around the world already know #frozenhoney. This is the latest fashion challenge on TikTok: it consists of emptying a bottle of water, filling it with honey and freezing it.

Then you just have to tighten it so that the ice cream get out and smash your teeth. Because yes, this is one of the consequences of the latest cry on social networks. The biggest problem? That its followers do not stop increasing.

Although it is true that, visually, it is a test of the most attractive (the gelatinous texture that is obtained seems addictive), from the point of view of health it is the least harmful. This is witnessed by Jorge Ferrús, periodontist, implantologist and co-founder of the Ferrus & Bratos clinic:

“Since the beginning of the trend, many have criticized the trend for its various negative and harmful effects, since excessive consumption of honey can cause various problems such as stomach pain.”

What does the intake of large amounts of honey mean for the mouth?

“Excessive consumption and in large quantities can be very harmful to oral health. This product is a concentrated aqueous solution of sugars and excessive consumption can lead to the appearance of cavities and the acceleration of said bacterial disease of the teeth,” says Ferrús.

“Beyond damaging the teeth, the consumption of frozen honey can also cause a brief pain, although very sharp and localized in those patients who suffer from tooth sensitivity.”

Also, do not forget your sticky and jelly-like texture: “Dentists always recommend avoiding these foods in orthodontic patients with brackets, as they can get embedded between the teeth or in the appliance and are very difficult to clean”.
