Mexico announced cooperation with the US to strengthen the borders between the two nations.

One of the central axes of the conversation between the presidents of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and the United States (USA), Joe Biden on July 12 was the control of the migratory flow.

It was in this sense that the Tabascan expressed to his counterpart the urgency of increasing the number of temporary work visas for Central Americans and Mexicans, as well as speeding up the regulation of nationals already established in the neighboring nation.

However, a statement from the Government of Mexico reported that another of the bilateral agreements involves investment of 1.5 billion dollars in border infrastructure for the remainder of López Obrador’s six-year term, that is, from 2022 to 2024.

“We are committed to completing a joint multi-year plan of modernization of US-Mexico border infrastructure for projects along the border of more than three thousand kilometers”, states the document.

It should be noted that the investment of the Mexican administration responds to the 3.4 billion dollars that the United States Government will allocate to carry out 26 projects for the construction and modernization of land ports of entry.

Said projects, according to Mexico, will benefit from the creation of “well-paid” jobs and increased border security. Meanwhile, he added, Mexican investment would unite a flow of trade and people “safer and more efficient”.

Despite the commitment that AMLO made in front of countrymen and women from the window of the Hotel Lombardy, your government’s letter does not refer to the number of visas to deliver or any matter related to said request.

It is pertinent to remember that, during the talk in the Oval Office of the White House, Biden urged López Obrador to tackle human and drug smuggling and thereby avoid human tragedies like the one on June 27, when 53 migrants were found dead and crowded into a trailer in San Antonio, Texas.

“I believe that a more consummate effort must be made with countries in the hemisphere. We have to attack this human trafficking industry that affects the most vulnerable,” said the American.
