Carlos Alcaraz could soon start to affect the fight for the Slam title between Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. The talented Spaniard is definitely in his prime and his continued growth shouldn’t put big limits on his results.
The 18-year-old from Murcia won his first Masters 1000 at the Miami Open and became the third youngest player in history to do so. Only Michael Chang and Rafael Nadal have done better than him.
His victory over Casper Ruud in the final also allowed Alcaraz to overtake Jannik Sinner and move within 29 points of the top ten. Tenth position is currently held by Cameron Norrie, who was beaten by Alcaraz at the Indian Wells Masters 1000.
Alcaraz warns Djokovic and Nadal: I can win a Slam this year
The Spaniard has spoken on more than one occasion about his aspirations and the sacrifices he is willing to make to realize his dreams.
In an interview granted to the newspaper “Marca”, he had no qualms about revealing that he is willing to make sacrifices, he was not afraid to reveal his two main goals: to become number one in the world and win Grand Slam tournaments.
“I think I am prepared both physically and mentally. I have the confidence, the level and the physicality to win a Grand Slam. I may not win Roland Garros right away, but for a Grand Slam this year I see myself ready.
And I’m not afraid to say it. I know there are great players. I think of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev or Stefanos Tsitsipas. But I feel like I’m ready to win one, although I have no idea when that time may come, but I hope it happens as soon as possible.
Now I am a different player than last year. All the experiences I’ve had have helped me succeed in a Masters 1000 semi-final and final.” Djokovic will be back on court at the Monte-Carlo Masters 1000, while Nadal, who is struggling with a stress fracture in the third arch left rib, will look to play the first clay tournament of his 2022 season in Madrid.
