El Salvador’s soccer team beat its Guatemalan counterpart 2-0 on Sunday and placed first in Group A, which is part of Mexico, of the Gold Cup.

The Salvadorans took the lead in the sector with three points, followed by Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago registering one unit after their goalless draw on Saturday. Martinique completes the group without points.

The Salvadoran team, which dominated most of the game at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, scored the first goal in the 81st minute with a shot from outside the area by Alexander Roldan hitting the ball hitting the right post.

El Salvador scored the second goal on the last play of the game when Joaquín Rivas hit a powerful cross sent by Walmer Martínez from the left sector in the 95th minute.

The representative of Guatemala, who on Friday entered the competition instead of Curaçao, who was ruled out after presenting several positive cases of Covid-19, did not generate any danger option for El Salvador’s goal.

Earlier, in Group B activity, Canada beat Martinique 4-1 with goals from Stephen Eustaquio, Cyle Larin, Jonathan Osorio and Theodor Corbeanu. For Martinique Emmanuel Riviere scored.

Meanwhile, the local United States beat Haiti 1-0 with a goal from Sam Vines.

The Canadians ranked first in Group B with three points, followed by the United States with the same units but fewer goals scored. Haiti and Martinique remain at the bottom without adding.
