Conmebol announced on Saturday that Neymar and Lionel Messi were chosen as winners of the award for Best Players of the Copa América, hours before they take to the field with the national teams of Brazil and Argentina to define the champion of the continental tournament.
“It is not possible to just choose one player because this competition has 2 best players,” Conmebol said in a statement.
“Both have exhibited a high level, being protagonists in the scoring table in this championship. In addition, they are leaders in attendance, the Argentine has 5 and the Brazilian star has served on 3 goals, demonstrating how decisive they are on the playing field,” added the entity regarding the election of its Technical Study Group.
The two stars will seek to conquer the Copa América for the first time in their careers. Messi was a member of the Argentine team that lost the 2007, 2015 and 2016 finals, while Neymar was left out of the champion Brazilian team in 2019 due to injury.
