Marc Marquez will miss next weekend’s Grand Prix of the Americas as the Repsol Honda rider continues to recover from a hand injury.
The six-time MotoGP champion suffered a fractured first metacarpal in his right hand at last month’s Portuguese Grand Prix. He then underwent surgery and subsequently missed the Argentine GP.
Marquez was expected to return to the Circuit of the Americas in Austin this week, but announced on social media Tuesday that his injury was still not fully healed. “I just had a CT scan and it was confirmed that the bone is still in the process of healing,” he said on social media.
He added: “After talking with the medical team led by Dr. Ignacio Roger de Ona, we have decided not to take any risks and, therefore, I will not be able to race in Austin. I will continue working and rehabilitating as I have been doing so far in order to get back on the bike as soon as possible”.
Marquez suffered the injury after a collision with Miguel Oliveira earlier in the day at Portimao, and the Spaniard was found guilty of irresponsible riding on his part in the crash.
The 30-year-old received a double long-lap penalty and the FIM confirmed that Marquez will serve the punishment the next time he takes part, although Honda lodged an appeal.
The Spanish Grand Prix on April 30 is now marked for Marquez’s possible return.
