NEW YORK — Nerves were on edge in New York City’s second-tallest office building after an elevator malfunction caused the floors inside to shake, building officials say.
People inside One Vanderbilt, the 93-story building next to Grand Central Terminal in midtown Manhattan that opened in 2020, said they could feel the skyscraper shaking on Monday afternoon .
The New York City Department of Buildings told our sister network NBC New York that a malfunction in an exterior elevator caused the interior to feel shaky. The department said crews were working on an outdoor elevator at SUMMIT One Vanderbilt, the tourist attraction and partially open-air deck atop the building with sweeping city views, when a mechanical issue rocked several floors.
SUMMIT One Vanderbilt was closed to the public at the time, authorities said. No injuries were reported and there was no danger to the building or occupants.
The elevator, which was undergoing maintenance, will need repairs, but a construction manager said there were no major issues.
