As you attempt to leave the Master’s Keep in Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania DLC, a chain will suddenly grab you and pull you into the depths of the Desecrated Necropolis, where death awaits your arrival. Wielding his signature razor-sharp scythe, the Grim Reaper isn’t about to let the Beheaded go without a fight. While this boss’s attacks and moves are relatively easy to read, dodging too soon or rolling in the wrong direction can mean the difference between life and death.

A basic understanding of Death’s main attacks is essential to overcoming his grip on your run in Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania. It has a total of six moves, including three ranged, two melee, and one defensive attack. The fight always starts with Death spawning his mini double-sided scythes that will chase you as you move around the arena. We strongly recommend that you take them down as a priority by parrying or attacking them, as they will choke your movement to dodge the boss’s hits and projectiles.

Death’s next move is a wide weapon throw with his main giant scythe. While the range of this attack may seem intimidating, you can dodge the projectile by constantly rolling to death just before your character is hit.

Without fail, Death will always follow his scythe throw with his death orbs, which also have tracking mechanics like his mini scythe weapons in Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania. To dodge these orbs, roll in the direction they came from, then roll in the opposite direction and perform a third roll in the opposite direction. This three-part move always ensures that the orbs orbit within a scrolling distance of you before dissipating.

Death’s defensive move is a shockwave blast that he typically performs when you land multiple melee attacks within seconds. You can roll towards the shockwave or away from it to avoid it.

Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania’s death boss has a second move with his scythe, during which he raises his weapon as purple bubbles appear on the ground. Make sure to get out of that purple area before he unleashes the attack.

Finally, the sixth and final move you need to watch out for in defeating Death in Dead Cells’ Return to Castlevania DLC is a charge attack that you can identify whenever the boss is pointing at you with his scythe in hand. Dodging this attack is equivalent to throwing his scythe; roll in the direction it came from.
