From the interest aroused by one of the characters in this story, Cilka Klein, was born “Cilka’s Journey”the book in which Morris tells the story of a Jewish prisoner who became the concubine of one of the commanders of Auschwitz-Birkenau, who was saved from starvation, disease and knew how to escape the gas chambers.
At just sixteen years old, Cilka is facing one of the most difficult times of her life. At the end of the war, she was accused of collaborating and spying with the NKVD, the Soviet secret police. Packed into a cattle train, she was transported to Vorkuta, where she had to serve a ten-year sentence and forced labor. Fortunately for her, however, Cilka manages to become an assistant in the gulag’s infirmary and there meets Ivan Kovac, with whom she will later fall in love.
It is thanks to Kovac that Cilka finds hope in humanity and the desire to continue living, she will find faith, generosity and will remain attached to the idea of love.
