Square Enix could be facing its biggest upheaval in a decade with a change of president…
Despite a great 2022 and the promise of an equally exciting 2023, Square Enix seems to be in the midst of an internal crisis.. The firm has just unveiled a document entitled “ Notification of changes of director representing the Company and a consolidated subsidiary » (« Notification of changes of directors representing the Company and a consolidated subsidiary“). A too long and obscure name, which really means that Square Enix and its board of directors are currently changing the direction of the company, and not by little: Among the proposed changes, we highlight, for example, the request that the president of Square Enix, Yosuke Matsuda, leave his post to Takashi Kiryu.
Square Enix: Dirty by Yosuke Matsuda?
As a reminder, Yosuke Matsuda has been the president of Square Enix since 2013, and recently knew how to separate with widely contested decisions, in particular through his obsession with NFTs, which earned him the aversion of many gamers. His potential replacement, Takeshi Kiryu, is younger: at 47, he is still unknown to the general public and has only been part of the organization since 2020. (He was previously managing director of global communications agency Dentsu). Initially hired as general manager of planning at Square Enix, he rose through the ranks to become chairman of the Chinese subsidiary’s board of directors just over a year ago, in 2022.
For the moment, nothing is done yet: the decision will be made in a vote that will take place at the 34th annual meeting of shareholders next June. Nothing has been done yet, but it seems that internally, things are moving very quickly at the Japanese publisher.
