On the afternoon of March 7, candidates for a position in the General Council of the National Electoral Institute (INE) attended the House of Representatives They came to present an examination which is part of the second phase of selection.

The technical evaluation committee pointed out that in total 531 people were called to present the test including 164 identified as female, 358 male, 5 non-binary, 3 gender unspecified and one as transgender woman

Luisa Rebeca Garza Lopez is the name of the only trans woman aspiring to be an INE adviser, who is a election official with 20 years of experience with a specialty in integration of polling station signs, promotion of there civic education and some democratic culture con gender perspective.

The applicant pointed out that its participation in the process of selecting the members of the General Council of the INE is a advancement of the trans community and expressed his wish that his case would not be a “unique case”, during a brief meeting with the media.

“Very happy because it is also very important for trans populations that we can normalize our presence in these political spaces, that it is not extraordinary, that it is not an event that occurs suddenly”

Regarding her performance on the exam, Garza assured that she was “very confident with the work that has been done and very confident with the work that the technical evaluation committee will do”.

The test she and more than 500 other people have taken aims to assess their Knowledge of constitutional, governmental, electoral and human rights issues.

Garza has 19 years of experience in Electoral Professional Service and participated in 6 federal election processes (2001-2017), 5 extraordinary elections in Oaxaca (2017-2018), integration of tables for Oaxaca votes abroad (2018) and in the simultaneous election of Oaxaca (2018).

His work was recognized in 2018 by a honorable mention at the Extraordinary Merit Prize, awarded by the INE.
