The Wesfalia Children’s Village asks for help after the children were left homeless due to mudslides in Cieneguilla

GlobeLiveMedia spoke with the director of the reception center, Ivo Solorzano, who gave us details of the situation they are going through following the mudslide that forced them to leave the center and they hope to return when this phenomenon has completed its journey. In total, 57 people, babies from three months to 17 years old, had to be transferred.

“Girls, boys and adolescents are housed in the parish of San José de Cieneguilla, where there are 57 people. And here in the shelter I also stayed with 6 other guardians to protect the property. There we’re trying to clean up because it’s actually flooded us with, well, the child housing pods,” he told this outlet.

Solorzano asks for help, mainly, with infant food products. He also states that the parish helps them with the district municipality, but they still need blankets, coats and mats to be able to rest.

“We also have babies who are going to need it. Well, you’ve got the groceries these days, but those things are going to be needed at some point milk and diapers,” the director mentions.

This phenomenon devastated the front part of the facade and partially penetrated certain spaces. Only the rear sector, where the natural protection of the shelter is located, could be “saved”. He also revealed that they have informed the National Civil Defense Institute of the situation and the risk it presents, but have not received a response.

“No one paid attention to us and these are results. (…) We are very worried that the flood waters will reactivate, this natural retaining wall could also rupture. And effectively disappear the refuge,” he said.

The director said that the only authorities who have approached are the representatives of the Mediator and the district municipality. Despite this, the guards carry out the cleaning work for them to return home.

“Imagine that they are not going to return to their village, we give them peace of mind and the security that they will return. This is a temporary problem that you must be calm. Also, we ask for a collaboration (…) we need people who can provide emotional support to these children while they are housed there in the shelter,” he asked.

On the other hand, they indicated that young graduates approached the shelter where the minors are for their care and to contribute to their activities.

For its part, the Office of the Mediator called on the authorities of Lima and the government to intervene, because local aid “is not enough”.
