Venezuela received this Monday from China half a million doses of vaccines against the coronavirus covid-19, just a few hours after the Government authorized the use of the Sinopharm antidote, made in the Asian country, informed President Nicolás Maduro.

”With great joy I inform that, at this moment, 500,000 doses of vaccines against covid-19 from the People’s Republic of China are arriving in Venezuela. Wonderful news that fills us with great hope. Soon we will begin the mass vaccination of our people “Maduro wrote on his Twitter account.

The president accompanied the message with a photo of a plane of the Venezuelan state airline Conviasa, although he did not detail which vaccine has reached Venezuela of the different elaborated in China.

In another subsequent message, he thanked “on behalf of the people of Venezuela“, To the president of China, Xi Jinping, “for his unwavering spirit of cooperation and solidarity” towards the Caribbean country.

“The Chinese vaccine will reinforce the immunization process that we started in the country”, he stressed.

A few hours before the plane’s landing, the Executive of Mature had announced the authorization of Sinopharm to immunize the population of his country against covid-19, thus becoming the second vaccine approved by the Caribbean nation after the Russian Sputnik V.

”Venezuela has approved the use of the Chinese vaccine Sinopharm to immunize the Venezuelan people against covid-19. Thanks to the China-Venezuela cooperation, we care for the health and life of our people, “the Ministry of Health said in a message on its Twitter social network account.

In October of last year, President Maduro had indicated that in Venezuela one of the four Chinese vaccines that were being developed at that time would be tested, although he did not specify which of them would be.

By then the Chinese vaccines from Sinovac, Sinopharm, the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products and Cansino Biologics were in clinical trials.

The president promised that, as soon as the tests were passed, the vaccine would be applied to the population “free of charge.”

On February 17, Maduro indicated that he hoped to start mass vaccination of the population in April and have the vaccines from Russia, China, Cuba and the Covax mechanism, a global collaboration initiative that seeks to accelerate the development of treatments, tests and covid-19 prevention methods.

His statement came after the first 100,000 doses of the Russian Sputnik V arrived in Venezuela, out of a total of ten million agreed with that country, and by then he indicated that the National Institute of Hygiene was evaluating the rest of the vaccines.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Venezuela has kept an air bridge open with China through which medicines and protective equipment have arrived to address the health crisis derived from the pandemic.
