WASHINGTON DC – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared martial law across the country as Russian forces began military operations early Thursday, NBC News reported.

Zelenskyy also spoke directly by phone with US President Joe Biden on Wednesday night. Biden said in a statement shortly after the call that he told the Ukrainian president that he “condemns this unprovoked and unwarranted attack by Russian military forces.”

Biden continued: “I briefed him on the steps we are taking to achieve international condemnation, including tonight at the United Nations Security Council. He asked me to call on world leaders to speak out against the blatant President Putin’s aggression, and to support the people of Ukraine”.

Ukraine’s president urged calm and did not detail what martial law would mean for the country, where numerous explosions have been reported near major cities.

Residents woke up to the news that Putin would begin military operations in eastern Ukraine along with the sounds of explosions as assaults on strategic targets began.

“Today we need each and every one of you to stay calm if you can stay home,” Zelenskyy said. “We are working, the army is working, the entire defense and security sector of Ukraine is working. I will keep in touch all the time as will the security and defense council. I’ll talk to you soon. Don’t panic, we are strong, we are ready, we will win.”

Meanwhile, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents via the Telegram app on Thursday morning local time to remain calm as Russian forces descended on Ukraine.

“Dear Kievans! Ukraine is attacked by the aggressor. The roar of shells can be heard in Kiev. The worst enemy now is panic. Let’s not lose the resistance,” Klitschko said, warning residents to prepare. to leave their homes if necessary.
