The justice of Panama ordered the provisional arrest of two women who the Public Ministry charged with mistreatment and embezzlement in the case of shelters for minors subsidized with state funds.

The investigated events date back to July 2020 after a complaint filed by the Ministry of Social Development. The appeal denounced an alleged irregular handling in the administration of US $ 90,000 in state subsidies for the operation of a shelter located in the township of Tocumen, in the metropolitan area of Panama City.

The authorities did not reveal the names of the detainees. However, Citizen Free Press learned that both have a defense, one of them only ex officio.

The lawyers did not express objections to the charges, only asking for house arrest.

In mid-February, the National Assembly delivered a report to the Public Ministry that includes alleged abuses committed against minors in those shelters. The deputies assure that in the field investigation they found cases of officials who did not do their job.

Shortly before, the Prosecutor’s Office had opened an ex officio investigation following the complaints published in local media.
