Cancún.- A plane collapsed on Tuesday afternoon in an accident that left at least two dead in the Nichupte Lagoon, an area near a commercial and residential complex in the hotel part of Cancun, in the Mexican Caribbean.

The emergency and civil protection services of the southeastern state of Quintana Roo answered the call for help that was issued around 4:00 p.m. local time (9:00 p.m. GMT) around the fall of an aircraft.

In a statement, Francisco Fernández Millán, president of the Quintana Roo Nautical Associates (ANQR), reported that due to the crash of a plane that occurred this afternoon in the Nichupté Lagoon, an emergency was activated to assist in the rescue of people.

He also stated that, at the time of the accident, personnel from various emergency services came out to support the maneuvers to attend to the passengers, although unfortunately the death of one of them was recorded while the rescue maneuvers were being carried out.

Later, the emergency services reported that a second person was rescued alive from the aircraft but died on the ground while receiving first aid from paramedics.

According to information provided by the authorities, the crashed plane was a Cessna 206 model, registration XA-UPC.

The device took off from Holbox and upon reaching the hotel zone, while preparing for landing, it collapsed in the Nichupté Lagoon.

The crashed plane belongs to an aviation company, while the local press reports that it was an air taxi and that four people were on board.

In the hotel zone, elements of the Armed Forces, the National Guard, Ministerial Police, Public Security, Firefighters and paramedics, as well as volunteers on jet skis, were mobilized to support rescue efforts.
