The three Turkish crew members who survived last week a pirate assault on their ship off the Nigerian coast have returned to their home country early this Saturday, while 15 companions remain kidnapped and missing.
Fourth Captain Furkan Yaren, Chief Engineer Ilhan Suha Tatligul and Oiler Bahadir Yesilalan arrived at Istanbul airport from Gabon after the attack on the Liberian-flagged freighter ‘Mozart’ in the Gulf of Guinea.
The container ship was heading from Lagos to Cape Town at the time of boarding. A sailor, an Azeri national, was killed in the attack. The three survivors locked themselves in the engine room waiting for help.
The pirates contacted the shipping company Borealis Maritime on Thursday and guaranteed that the 15 were unharmed and together, according to a company official. The pirates have demanded a ransom in exchange for their release.
