At least 54 people died and 105 were injured in a traffic accident in Chiapas, confirmed the state governor, Rutilio Escandón, on Twitter.
Most of the fatalities, 49, died at the scene, while 5 died at the hospital, Escandón said.
He added that 83 of the injured are men and 22 are women.
Earlier, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said on his social networks that one of the vehicles involved in the accident was transporting migrants from Central America.
“I deeply regret the tragedy caused by the overturning of a trailer in Chiapas that was transporting Central American migrants. It is very painful. I hug the families of the victims,” Andrés Manuel said on his official Twitter account.
Civil Protection of Chiapas indicated through its Facebook page that the accident occurred at the height of the Belisario Domínguez and Ribera Cauharé bridge in Chiapa de Corzo.
Governor Rutilio Escandón offered his condolences and instructed that the wounded be treated. He said responsibilities will be determined.
Francisco Alvarado, Delegate of the Red Cross, told CNN that the National Institute of Migrants is assisting the migrants who were part of this accident.
The Secretary of Foreign Relations of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, also spoke about the accident: “Serious accident in Chiapas with victims of nationals of other countries. Attentive countries in the region
The Minister of Foreign Relations of El Salvador reported that her consuls were moving to the scene of the accident, although as of Thursday night they had no confirmation that there were citizens of that nationality.
His counterpart from Guatemala, meanwhile, said he deeply regretted “the accident that occurred in the state of Chiapas, resulting in the number of victims, including the fatalities, of migrants.”

The Foreign Ministry of Ecuador is also in contact with the Mexican authorities. “At the moment, and according to preliminary information, it has not been confirmed that there are Ecuadorians among the victims, since it is presumed that the people who died would be from Central American countries,” they said in a statement.
