Three injured policemen left an attack on a traffic checkpoint in Norte de Santander

Around noon on March 10, 2023, an attack was reported against a group of traffic officers identified as Álvaro David Peñalosa Córdoba, Chief Mayor; Emerson David Silva Jaimes, deputy steward, and patrolman Jorge Luis Silva Pinzón. In addition, authorities reported a civilian hit by the explosive device.

This event occurred in La Chacona, a road that connects the capital of the department to Sardinata, a municipality that is part of the northern region of the department, close to the sub-region of Catatumbo.

The police were attacked with gunshots and explosives, so they managed to notify one of the municipal units.

Diego Villamizar, human rights defender in the department, in statements to Weekexpressed concern over the incident and called on the authorities to step up security in the area given the fact that armed groups have strengthened in recent weeks.

“There are already several attacks against the police in this commune, it shows that the criminal groups have no desire for peace, we fear that the national government will not say anything, the attacks and murders of police and soldiers are only justified by statistics, In the region there is a government abandonment of ‘change’ not only in terms of security, but also in social policy,” Villamizar told the aforementioned newspaper.
