INTERNATIONAL DRAFTING.- Thousands of Haitians demonstrated this Sunday against the new Constitution promoted by President Jovenel Moise and in defense of the current Magna Carta, from 1987.

The demonstration, which took place mostly peacefully, had the support of opposition parties and various religious congregations and is the first of two days of protests called on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the promulgation of the current Constitution. celebrate this Monday.

Many protesters carried banners against the “dictatorship” that Moise wants to impose, others waved the Haitian flag and some carried tree branches, something common in protests in Haiti.

Along the way, the crowd grew and some protesters set up barricades with burning tires, but there were no clashes with the police.

Throughout the entire route, the protesters removed posters placed in the street by the Government in recent weeks asking to vote “yes” to the new Constitution promoted by President Moise in the referendum scheduled for next month of June.

Moise is promoting the new Constitution because he considers that the current fundamental law is the origin of the chronic political instability that Haiti has experienced in recent decades.

The draft Constitution has been drawn up by a group of experts and is now open for discussion, but the opposition refuses to participate in that process.

The opposition believes that Moise’s mandate ended on February 7, and since then they have not recognized his authority as head of state.

The draft Constitution expressly vetoes the possibility of Moise running for reelection, something he cannot do under current legislation either.

The government intends to hold the constitutional referendum in June and two months later, in September, to organize legislative and presidential elections.
