A new modality of extortion checked in Cali by criminal gangs whose instructions presumably come from prisons. There metropolitan police found that the main purpose of this modality is to extort people from the commercial sector.
They capture two extortionists who posed as members of the Aragua train in Bogotá
Two Venezuelan women tried to threaten their mother’s boss, owner of a beauty salon in the city of Barrios Unidos, demanding 10 million pesos in exchange for her safety and that of her family.
According to the authorities, the criminals call the person from whom they ask for an estimate or a direct service and they quote them in a place far from the urban area. In fact, it has been found that dates usually take place in places bad phone signal and in the sites removed from your location.
Thus, once the victim arrives at the agreed place, the criminals contact him to demand money so as not to harm him and even call relatives and acquaintances to threaten them with harming the victims. they do not send money taking advantage of the impossibility of communicating directly with them.
This is how extortionists operate in the main cities of Colombia
Among the best-known modalities of the police are threatening phone calls and pamphlets
The commander of Cali Gaula, Carlos Armando Jaime Mora, indicated that:
“They use the trust of friends and family to receive the money, the proceeds of extortion; this in their bank accounts or deals with their personal data. This makes it one more element of the extortion rings and is classified as a crime.”
The soldier is accused of having sold intimate photos and videos of his ex-girlfriend: he charges between 20,000 and 50,000 dollars on social networks
Although she has already brought his case to the attention of the Attorney General’s office and the Department of Defense, she says, her case has not progressed and the man is continuing with this content in his files.
According to the authorities, the main key to avoid being a victim of the so-called modality “False service”, is to immediately cut off communication with the extortionists. This includes not providing personal information that could facilitate your action for extortion purposes.
For this reason, they emphasize that if calls are received whose origin is doubtful and it is suspected as a possible extortion, the information must be given immediately to the United Action Group for Personal Liberty and Anti-Police Extortion – Gaula.
On the other hand, the modality would already be operational in other regions of the country. Even the authorities of Magdalene identified this type of extortion through digital channels through which criminals contacted victims, specifically, social networks. Some of the services for the crime corresponded to the sale of real estate, heavy machinery, construction, moving, among others.
In January 2023, the specialized unit of the National Police of Gaula revealed that in the previous year there had been a greater number of complaints for cases of extortion. In fact, the information showed that around 9,243 cases in 2022, while in 2021, 8,342 were reported.
To this is added that the Gaula announced the capture of 2,504 people charged with the crime of extortion. However, one of the data that has drawn the most attention to the report concerns the fact that most of these criminal cases are committed from prisons.
One of the structures on which the authorities have an eye for this type of activity is “Tren de Aragua”, a criminal organization whose action consists in calling people dedicated to commerce in order to dictate death threats to make them deposit large sums of money.
In fact, in the first week of February 2023, three patrollers and a mayor of the CAI Caldas of the city of Kennedy, Bogotá, were sent to prison after being reported by extortion case towards citizens in the name of the criminal organization “Tren de Aragua”.
The Gaula reminds citizens that all acts of extortion must be reported, whether the person is the direct victim of this crime or someone they know. To do this, you can contact the free of charge in the national territory 147. The line is available 24/7.
