Salvadoran Victoria Salazar, who died in Mexico After being subdued by the police, she was buried this Sunday in a cemetery in the city of Sonsonate (southwest) in the presence of family and close friends.

The coffin with the mortal remains of Victoria were taken in a white car from a funeral home in Sonsonate, 66 km southwest of San Salvador, to a private cemetery in La Generosa, on the outskirts of the city.

“This day the family gave a Christian burial to Victoria, and close friends have attended the funeral.”A spokesman for the Presidential House, whose government of President Nayib Bukele, provided support to the family to repatriate the woman’s body from Mexico on Saturday, explained to AFP.

The 36-year-old victim had lived in Mexico for five years and died on March 27 after being subdued by police in Tulum, a resort in the Mexican Caribbean. She had two daughters, ages 15 and 16.

This Sunday, the Archbishop of San Salvador, José Luis Escobar, after lamenting at a press conference the death of Salazar, indicated that it should move the governments not only of El Salvador but also of Mexico and the United States to defend and respect “the rights of migrants.”

The prosecutor’s office for the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, where Tulum is located, reported on Saturday that the four policemen named for the death of Salazar, including a woman, were formally charged after being captured on the day of the events.

The judge in charge of the case determined that the prosecution had presented sufficient elements to “verify the probable participation of the four policemen in the crime of femicide,” for which they were sentenced to preventive detention, says a statement.

The victim’s family has asked that her death must not go unpunished, and Bukele has demanded justice in this case.
