A 22-year-old man from Chicago fleeing police appeared to drop a gun when an officer fatally shot him in the back late last month, according to a video released Wednesday.

An independent Chicago police review board released the video and other investigative materials related to the murder of Anthony Alvarez on March 31, a day after allowing his family to see him.

Before its release, Mayor Lori Lightfoot called for calm, just as she did two weeks ago, when footage was released showing police killing 13-year-old Adam Toledo.

In one of the videos posted on the website of the Civil Police Responsibility Office (COPA), the body camera of an agent shows him chasing after Alvarez. When the suspect reaches a lawn in front of a house, the agent can be heard yelling:Drop your weapon! Drop your weapon!”, before opening fire. It seems that Alvarez dropping a gun after five shots are fired and it falls to the ground.

While Alvarez lie on the ground, ask: “Why are you shooting me?” and the agent responds: “You had a weapon”. The police officer then points to the gun when his colleagues arrive at the scene.

In that shaky video it is clear that Alvarez His back was to the agent when he shot him. An agent is also heard saying that there is a weapon near Álvarez.

The family of Alvarez received the video on Tuesday. His attorney Todd Pugh said that in the video he saw “a Chicago police officer shoot his son while fleeing from them.”

The police did not release details about the officer who shot, but a police report that COPA published along with the video identified him as Evan Solano, 29, who has been in that department for six years.

Authorities did not say why the police were chasing Alvarez, but during a press conference before the video was released Wednesday, Lightfoot referred to a traffic violation.
