The executive vice president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, arrived in Qatar to attend the opening ceremony of the World Cup, which will be held this Sunday at the Al Bayt stadium, in the city of Jor.

The official reported, through her Twitter account, about her arrival in the Arab country for “the opening ceremony of the 2022 World Cup, a great sporting event for the peoples of the world.”

Rodríguez congratulated the emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, and the people of this nation for the “extraordinary preparation of the first technological soccer World Cup.”

The vice president was received at the Hamad International Airport, in Doha, by the director of the Protocol Department of the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ibrahim Yousif Abdullah Fakhro, and by the Venezuelan ambassador to the Arab country, Carlos Mata, according to the agency Qatar news.

Last Thursday, the Venezuelan government spoke out in favor of Qatar and called for an end to criticism of the Arab nation, which has been questioned for its repressive policies against women and the LGBTI population.

Through a statement, the Executive of Nicolás Maduro pointed out that the criticism began since Qatar won, in 2010, the United States the bid to host the tournament, and urged to “stop the calls for boycotts made against the maximum football event”.
