Rio de Janeiro, February 20. A bright and colorful show that told the story of the arrival of buffaloes on an island at the mouth of the Amazon River in Brazil opened the second and final day of parades by the best samba schools of Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival on Monday.

The Paraíso do Tuiuti samba company lit up Rio’s sambadrome after a pyrotechnic show that ended in the shadow of the thunderous noise of the drums (orchestra), made up of more than a hundred musicians and dominated by a battalion of percussion.

Its more than 3,000 members, dressed in themed costumes alluding to the story told, filled the audience with joy as they paraded along the more than 700 meters of track accompanied by gigantic floats dressed in colors and with articulated sets that dazzled the public.

Sculptural ‘garotas’, wasting skill and energy with their dances, were applauded by the spectators, who this year numbered nearly 100,000 each day, letting the sambadrome explode.

THE STORY

The island of Marajó, located in the north of the country, has the largest herd of buffaloes in all of Brazil. The animal is present in its economy, its culture, its cuisine and even serves as a means of transport for the Police.

That is why the Paraíso Tuiuti school, six times champion of the parades of the special group, the highest category of all the samba companies, decided to tell how the buffalo ended up on this island, located in the state of Pará and whose size is almost equal to that of Switzerland.

According to the story, a ship which left India two centuries ago laden with buffaloes and spices for French Guiana crashed against a rock during a storm and was wrecked before reaching its destination. destination.

The entire crew died and only the buffalo that ended up on the island of Marajó survived.

In addition to Paraíso de Tuiuti, five other schools will parade on the sambadrome podium between Monday evening and Tuesday morning to tell stories about culture and the black race in Brazil.

The parade of the twelve “schools” of samba of the so-called Special Group, sort of the first category among the nearly 100 that will be presented this year, is the main attraction of the carioca carnival.

During the two days of special group parades, around 35,000 sambistas, 1,200 percussionists and around 70 parade floats pass through the Sambodromo for an audience of around 200,000, including those who frequent the special spaces mounted in the stands ( cabins). ECE
