The legal tactic of Emma Coronel, wife of “Chapo”, to lower his sentence in the US

After being arrested on February 22, 2021, and pleading guilty to conspiracy to distribute drugs, money laundering, and dealing with a designated drug dealer, Emma Coronel Aispuro will finally receive her sentence at the end of November.

Emma Coronel will receive her sentence on November 30 for drug distribution, money laundering and criminal conspiracy.

The resource is popularly known in the legal world as “Scape valve”, safety valve in English, and has to do with the criminal record of the person involved, since the law favors those who have not had a criminal attitude in the past, as long as you have pleaded guilty during the trial.

This type of benefit is only used for drug-related cases, but specifically for those involved who represent a “minor threat” to society and its security, according to Univision, so Emma Coronel would be a strong candidate to reduce the minimum sentence.

“She meets these requirements. That is why we are confident that you can qualify for the safety valve and give him a much lower sentence than he would have had if he had gone to trial,” said the lawyer. Mariel Colon in the program Janiot PM, which Patricia janot leads.

This was the reason why Coronel’s legal team requested a postponement, in something that he described as “legal strategy”and that, for the same reason, he could not delve into details before the judge’s decision, which will be taken on the same day, November 30.

Emma Coronel is defended by the lawyer Mariel Colón Mirón, who is also in charge of the defense of Joaquín Guzmán.

Among the questions asked by the interviewer, one of the issues that came to the fore was the possibility of an agreement with the United States government to provide information on the Sinaloa Cartel, with the aim of reducing penance.

“That is always a possibility for everyone, for everything demanded. Let her do it. No, I do not believe. There is no need ”, affirmed Mariel, since the criminal organization itself could act against his family, a risk that they also do not consider necessary to obtain a lesser sentence.

“Because she has girls in Mexico and what happens to cooperators, to cooperators’ families, is very well known. So why risk the lives of your girls, the lives of your family?”, he sentenced.
