The use of air conditioning equipment triggers the demand for electricity on high temperature days.

The heat wave that crosses the Greater Buenos Aires (GBA) continues to have a direct impact on the demand for electricity, to the point that this Saturday the second consecutive record for energy consumed within the Argentine Interconnection System (SADI).

Yesterday, according to information from the Compañía Administradora del Mercado Mayorista Eléctrico SA (bedroom)a new all-time high in electricity demand was recorded in SADI for a summer working day, after reaching 28,562 MW at 3:15 p.m.

Today, at 2:45 p.m., the historic electricity demand record for a summer Saturday was broken. According to data published by the agency, at that time the 27,151MW of powerleaving behind 26,746MW which had been reached on February 11 of the same year. This is of course an unusual request, not only because it is a record value, but also because it occurred in March, already in the last days of l ‘summer.

It should be noted that SADI includes part of the NEA, NOA, GBA, Central Zone, Patagonia, Littoral, Comahue, Province of Buenos Aires and Cuyo. However, Greater Buenos Aires alone accounts for nearly 40% of electricity demand. This is why the heat wave in this part of the country moves the needle of the entire Argentine interconnection system.

In addition, it must be considered that temperatures are high throughout the country. In Gualeguaychu (Entre Ríos), for example, 39.3°C were reached at 3 p.m. and at Rosario (Santa Fe) the peak reaches 38.1°C.

Based on this scenario, from Cammesa, they recalled that the forecasts anticipate the persistence for the next few days of very high temperatures and strong thermal sensations in the main urban centers of the country, mainly in the central and northern region, reason for which they recommend the rational and conscious use of electrical energy.

Although there were no massive power cuts, as happened on March 1 due to the fire that broke out near the Atocha I nuclear power plant, there were specific cuts in certain districts of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA). yesterday, between Edesur there Edenor 20,487 users affected by service interruptions have been identified.

The continuation of high temperatures could lead to tomorrow breaking a new record: that of the demand for electricity corresponding to a Sunday in summer.

For now, the historical maximum corresponds to last February 12, when Cammesa reported that there had been lawsuits 25,739MW. If this mark is exceeded tomorrow, it will have put an end this week to all the records that were in force before this season: the maximum summer demand on a working day (it was reached on Friday), on Saturday (it was reached yesterday) and on Sunday (could be given tomorrow).

This will of course depend on the temperature reached throughout the national territory, but also on the use made of electrical appliances.

The other three records it measures cam, those corresponding to winter demand, also all took place in the same week, but not consecutively. The first occurred on June 23, 2022, when SADI Energy reached 26,062 MW of power (record for a winter working day).

On the 25th and 26th of the same month, the highest historical demand for winter Saturdays and Sundays was reached, with respective powers of 23,376 and 23,535 MW.
