The microbiology service of the Gregorio Marañón hospital in Madrid has confirmed the first case of the omicron variant of the covid in Spain in a traveler from South Africa who has mild symptoms.

In its Twitter account, the Madrid hospital service confirms the case of this patient who, according to the Community of Madrid, is 51 years old, is isolated in quarantine and returned on November 28 from South Africa with a stopover in Amsterdam.

The General Directorate of Public Health maintains the epidemiological surveillance of the close contacts of the flight that landed in Madrid from the Dutch capital.

The positive, confirmed by sequencing, was detected by screening with the antigen test at the Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas airport .
