The demonstration on the ground was less massive than expected

“We decided on this call due to the strong impact of drought, frost and hailstorms that have caused havoc among small and medium producers,” justified the head of the Argentine Agrarian Federation, Carlos Achetoniwhich is the organizing entity.

The rally began at 8 a.m. at Arroyo Seco Access at the intersection of Highway 9 and Route 90. Turnout was lower than expected compared to other protests similar: barely dozens of rural people reached the main concentration to express their dissatisfaction.

The meeting was led by Achetoni, who is accompanied by the other presidents of the producer organizations that make up the liaison table

According to the calculations of the organizers, around 400 producers are taking part in the assembly in the area of ​​Villa Constitución, which has been suffering the consequences of the drought for 4 years. In the act, the mobilized declare themselves in “state of alert and mobilization”. And they assure that they are giving the government time until Monday, March 13, so that in the midst of the drought, embargoes, the closing of accounts and the payment of advances and benefits are suspended.

“We are going to question politics to ask for public policies for the sector and for the poverty they have engendered (…). Don’t be wary of the Linking Table, you have to add everyone to manage,” Achetoni said.

“Let’s prepare for the march to Buenos Aires,” he added.

“We want to keep producing,” he said. Andrea Sarnari, union action secretary of the agrarian federation, who also declared: “we come here to say enough is enough. We need urgent and structural measures. We are people of dialogue and proposals, but the government’s measures in the face of drought are making headlines and are not helping producers”.

In this respect, he pleaded for an agricultural model with producers in the activity, with development serving the cities of the interior and generating rooting. He also called for a reduction in the tax burden and the unification of the exchange rate.

Among those present is the president of the PRO and candidate to succeed Alberto Fernández, Patricia Bullrich.

Other entities of the Link table also support mobilization, such as the Argentinian Rural Confederations and the Argentine Rural Societydespite the fact that they maintain a dialogue with the Secretary of Agriculture, Juan José Bahillo.

This will be the first producer protest action called by any of the entities since the last ministerial change.

In the middle of this month, the government launched measures to livestock sector, in order to avoid a drop in the supply of animals for slaughter. Among them is a 40% subsidy, with a cap of $5,000 per animal, to send calves for weaning feedlot and thus preserve the rare pastures that remained after the drought.

The Agrarian Federation believes the measures could hurt farmers, who were experiencing a recovery in agricultural prices that had slowed in recent days.

The Argentine Rural Society adhered to the appeal and its presidentNicholas Pinowarned that the country’s economic situation “is becoming more and more critical and that national, provincial and municipal governments must provide answers to every request and certain solutions to resolve this crisis”.

“We need not only measures for the situation, but also fundamental changes, such as the elimination of withholding taxes and different exchange rates,” the leader said.

Likewise, the Argentine Association of Agricultural Producers (AAPA), the Rural Society of Río Cuarto and the Rural Society of Rosario have also announced their participation.
