There International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) rHe made a list with the best goalkeepers of the last 35 years (from 1987 to 2022) and his methodology to create it caused controversy as it omitted great goalkeepers who made history. Among the most prominent surnames, the one that appears at the top is Gianluigi Buffon.
The Italian is one of the most recognized under the three sticks. Born in 1978, he began his professional career in Parma in 1995, where he quickly became a first-choice goalkeeper. In 2001, he joined Juventus and became a star there, winning many titles, including 9 Serie A, 4 Italian Cups and 6 Italian Super Cups. Moreover, in 2006, he played a key role in his team’s victory at the World Cup in Germany.
Note that the ranking was made on the basis of the top 20 prepared by the IFFHS each year. This list was awarded points to each location, receiving 20 for the first, 19 for the second and so on. This way no one added more points than buffonwith 357. Behind him appears the Spaniard Iker Casillas, with 260, who began his career at Real Madrid, where he became a starter and won numerous titles, including five Spanish leagues, two Copas del Rey and three Champions League, among others. Moreover, he shone in 2010 to win the World Cup in South Africa.
Third was the German Neuer manualstar of Bayern Munich champion of the Champions League 2013 and 2020 and of the Germany team which was champion of the World Cup in Brazil in 2014. In addition, Latin America stands out in the ranking Jose Luis Felix Chilavert (Paraguayan), Training (Brazil), Allison Becker (Brazil), Claudio Taffarel (Brazil), Julio Cesar Soares (Brazil), Rogerio Ceni (Brazil) Robert Abbondanzieri (Argentina), Sergio Goycochea (Argentina), Jorge Campos (Mexico), Guillermo Ochoa (Mexico), Claude Bravo (Chile), Oscar Eduardo Cordoba (Colombia) and Keylor Navas (Costa Rica).
Among the great absentees who have sparked controversy, the first who stands out is Emilian Back Martinez, chosen by Fifa as the best of 2022 in his position. Obviously, the methodology by which the list was compiled prevented the Argentine world champion Qatar from being among the best for having only had one season at the top level. There was no place for the Turk either Rustu Recberone of the great figures of the 2002 World Cup, nor for the Colombian Farid Mondragonthe Uruguayan Fernando Musleraor for Kasper SchmeichelPremier League champion with Leicester City.
