Taxi drivers could go on strike on February 22

The taxi drivers’ unions are very dissatisfied with the current conditions for exercising their profession, according to what some have pointed out, they lie in the lack of control currently available to digital transport platforms, the tariffs which now govern them, between other issues. . This is why they announced a few days ago a union strike next Wednesday, February 22.

“This February 22, we, the union of taxi drivers at the national level, are mobilizing for the non-conformity that we have with this illegality which is outdated in everything. Private cars and motorbikes provide a public service,” he said. Manuel GilPresident of the Bogotá Taxi Drivers’ Union.

Given the situation, the Ministry of transportation called them to a meeting to discuss these issues: “Faced with the mobilizations that some taxi drivers’ unions have announced for next Wednesday, February 22 in some cities of the country, the National Government, led by the Ministry of Transport, is manifesting all his arrangement build through dialogue concerted solutions to the problems posed by this important sector of taxi driving, on which we will announce significant progress and recognition next Tuesday, February 21,” the portfolio wrote in a letter.

Despite the will expressed by the Government to engage in dialogue and be able to move forward with certain agreements, if nothing is achieved on Tuesday, the trade union demonstration continues and if this is the case, the mobility of Colombians could be considerably affected. We remind you here in which regions of the country the unions have confirmed their participation.

According to the declarations given a few weeks ago by representatives of this sector, the mobilization would be in: Villavicencio, Cali, Bucaramanga, Santa Marta, Cúcuta, Bogotá, Medellín, Valle de Aburrá and Tunja.

The biggest concern at this point is that taxi drivers have threatened to block airports around the country if necessary, they have even assured that they are not afraid of their cars being taken to their patios.

“We’re going to give our all and if this government or someone comes along and says they’re going to approve old private vehicles to run the service, we’re going to mobilize across the country to take over the airports. We’re going to dump the cars on the rails and take them to the yards because we are already on the verge of bankruptcy,” he said. Hugo Ospinaone of the most recognized leaders of the taxi drivers’ union RCR News.

So far, they have not confirmed which roads will be affected, but it is highly likely that they will block the main roads of each city and the roads of other means of transport.

Since the beginning of 2023, the union has made it clear that it continues to present certain problems with regard to the guarantees that have been granted regarding the other means of transport used by Colombians and the prices that they believe do not correspond to the needs it has today to face the union. Based on the above, in different statements, they made it clear that these would be their disagreements:

1. Illegality and informality in transport.

2. Fuel prices.

3. Sanctions regime.

4. Sanctions and interventions with transport authorities.

In a letter, they made it clear that the previous four points had hurt them and their families: “More than a million families are economically dependent on our industry, which is on the verge of collapse, due of the increase in illegality and the lack of protection for the entities in charge of regulation, which have also violated legitimate expectations and, on the contrary, what they have done is go to meet those who are outside the law and supported by former parliamentarians and current parliamentarians, who ignore the deep hermeneutics of this fight and send a bad example to the general public, because it is clear that not following the legal framework of transport and transgressing our constitution is the way to achieve that the illegal is romantically sold as moral, by the pity of the media towards them and a loss of prestige before our industry”.
