In November 2022, the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef) reported that around 30 cases of sexual violence against girls, boys and adolescents are reported every day in Peru; however, the number may increase due to the rarity of complaints.

“The numbers are large and alarming, but they may be under-reported as many teenagers or children do not report. This is because often within the family it is difficult to recognize what is happening or perhaps the child or adolescent feels confused and does not mention it,” warned Laura Salamanca, representative of UNICEF in Peru at the time.

The specialist added that Peru does not have a single case registration system, but it is estimated that between 2017 and 2021, at the Women’s Emergency Center (CEM), of the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations ( MIMP), reported 54,546 cases of child sexual abuse, which equates to 30 cases per day.

The regions with the most cases of sexual violence against children and adolescents were: Lima (16,649), La Libertad (3,261), Junín (3,064), Cusco (2,509) and San Martín (2,496).

In addition, girls and adolescents accounted for 92% of the cases followed. Of this number, 33% were girls between 0 and 11 years old and 67% were adolescents between 12 and 17 years old.
